Sandye Kelso was born and raised in Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State University first with an undergrad degree in Education and later a Masters in Guidance Counseling. Kelso interacted in the Iowa school system for over thirty-three (33) years, first as a High School Math teacher then as a High School Guidance Counselor. After she retired, she returned to teaching part-time for three colleges. As a wife, mother of two grown sons, active community member and now the proud grandmother of two dynamic grandchildren she has lived the education system.

Kelso, with her insights gained from her more than thirty (30) years as a High School teacher and guidance counselor, speaks to the possibilities of schooling and how each of us, whether student, parent, or family support individual, can make the difference in the educational experience and therefore the resulting use of the hours spent in a classroom.

Little did Brenda know that the coursework to obtain her Masters Degree in School Guidance would lead her to become aware of her own intelligence style(s) and prompt her, already acknowledged as a quality teacher, to teach differently.Brenda Bormann grew up in a rural community in Southern Iowa in a farm family that valued education. She attended Iowa State University to attain her Family and Consumer Sciences Education degree. Later Bormann also earned her Master’s Degree in K-12 School Guidance.

She has been teaching Family Consumer Sciences in the high school classroom for 36 years. In addition, she has also taught health and leadership classes. Many of her summers were spent traveling Iowa, teaching teachers about Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences and about incorporating leadership and citizenship into the classroom. She personally developed both of these courses due to the passion she has for the classroom.
In this interview, Brenda shares her own journey as a student, teacher, and then teacher of teachers as she has improved her own teaching style and assisted many in shifting theirs. As a long time educator, Bormann provides insights to teachers and parents alike. Her insights into the value of education and supporting various intelligences are truly refreshing.

Welcome to ‘You Matter ‘show – Living the Real Dream

Touch is our most fundamental sense. In this show we explore why it’s so important, what happens when this sense is neglected, and how it is so pivotal in our expression of who we are in the world.

Our skin is all that stands between us and the outside world. It protects us from harmful bacteria and the rays of the sun. It keeps fluids in, helps regulate our temperature – but more than a shield. It lets in world through touch. It’s a sense we tend to take for granted and yet it’s the first to develop and the last to leave. Our skin is the largest organ in the body. If lose sense of touch you’d be in deep trouble. You wouldn’t feel pain or pleasure and you wouldn’t be able to tell if you were damaging yourself.

What we define as touch actually encompasses a number of different senses – such as warmth, cold, pain, light touch, deep pressure and proprioception (this is all about knowing what our body’s position in space – e.g. flexing a foot – you can tell it’s flexed even if your eyes are shut) Through our sense of touch we can learn about the world in many ways. And we can learn about ourselves and what is truly important.

This journey has supported her in becoming the dynamic lady she is today.

Joanne learned about community early in life through her years in the church and her study of Greek mythology. Growing tired of traditional community, Sprott drifted off to a spiritual kind of humanism. Having spent her 30s taking care of everyone else in her family and not really doing her own spiritual work, she began a six-year relationship with the church community idea in the form of the Unitarian Universalist Church in 1995.

In 1998, she was re-introduced to her own spirituality, first with the Celestine Prophecy, and then with the Conversations With God books. She then started a program of inner healing and spiritual exploration with other channeled sources, past-life regression therapy, and soul retrieval/unification work. All of these experiences took her through and then beyond the books to real changes in the way she approached life and her relationships with others and her perspective on community.

In this wonderful conversation, Joanne shares her adventures in community, first by understanding community, then through her own awareness of what she was seeking in community, and finally a full understanding of how best she can support and be supported by community. Joanne steps out a bit and speaks to the possibilities of what communities may look like in the future and how best to utilize the popular internet communities to discover the connections we all seek.

Are there certain fragrances that instantly transport you back in time? The smell of baked bread? Cut grass? A particular cologne your mother wore? A special blend of coffee?

Our sense of smell is the sense that is most closely linked with memory. When we breathe in a fragrance the way it gets processed in the brain is such that it connects instantly with our emotional center, and so elicits a response. It is a fabulous way to bring a sense of calm too.

What fragrances bring a sense of calm for you? Which ones are soothing and comforting for you? Those will be the ones you’ll need to call on at times when you need to handle stress. Our sense of smell is so intricately connected with memory and emotion… so how can we use this sense more consciously in our life to sniff out new opportunities and solutions?

And here are some interesting smell facts: Dogs have 1 million smell cells per nostril and their smell cells are 100 times larger than humans! If your nose is at its best, you can tell the difference between 4000-10,000 smells!

A Near-Death Experience as a child sent Stuart Rosen on a life-long spiritual journey. Rosen became a motivational speaker at the age of 11, and in his 20′s became known as “GuruStu”. He is a coach, speaker and author of over 150 articles and two books, “101 Great Ways to Improve Your Life”, “Overcoming Obstacles”. He is also a professional cartoonist, with over 250 cartoons called “Enlightoons”. His recent project, “DARE to be your BEST” is the first novel in a series of five, which is currently in Round 3 of the Next Top Spiritual Author contest. He is also the host of the DARE to be your BEST radio program, based on the principles in the books.

Rosen, with his unique personal experiences and response to those experiences, brings us fact to face with who we are in life and therefore in community. What part does sound play in our enjoyment of life? How does it impact our mood, our creativity, our relationships?

Here’s an interesting phenomenon: Picture the scene – the film’s rolling, images of streets, sky scrapers, people walking. The music is sinister and unharmonious. There’s a creepy horror movie feel about it as if something bad is going to happen. The images appear sinister.

Fade to black.

Now, play the same piece of film, this time with something beautiful playing in the background, let’s say Pachelbel’s Canon. Lo and behold, those same images now appear friendly, inviting. Upbeat. Same images, different music and there’s a completely different mood. All movie composers are well aware of this fact.

Sound is so important in our lives. From the heartbeat sound in the womb, to soothing music, to the tone of voice we use, sound has huge power to impact our mood and feeling of wellbeing.
